What does assertiveness mean?

In times of immediate responses and connection 24 hours a day, talking about long-term transformation is a risk! But… we believe you can (and must!) dream big, and make a daily effort to get better every day. This is our mission - seeing you speaking English and being a Leader wherever you go. "The 5 Essential People Skills" was written by Dale Carnegie and its goal is to improve your people skills. In other words, to improve your relationships at work and at home.

Dale starts the first chapter talking about assertiveness. "With the advance of technology and the speed of business, those who master interpersonal skills not only are a greater asset in today's workplace but achieve greater success. Computers and cell phones have made a big difference in our lives, but the importance of effective people skills has not diminished and it never will". The author says that work has become easier and faster in many ways, but the relationships seem to go the wrong way.

"Getting where you want to go is important, but that doesn't mean you can run all the red lights". with this metaphor Carnegie is teaching us the importance of respecting others while we fight for our rights (and dreams!). There are two poles and our goal is to be balanced. "Aggressive people are self-centered, inconsiderate, hostile, and arrogantly demanding". On the other side, "passive people are weak, compliant, and disrespectful of his/her own best interests". Assertiveness is the middle ground between these poles. Are you more passive or aggressive?

Assertiveness is the ability to speak and act in ways that naturally cause people to respond attentively and positively. It's the basic core element that is at the center of each of the five essential people skills, and it demands our dedication to be put into practice.
