"The 5 Essential People Skills" was written by Dale Carnegie and its goal is to improve your people skills. In other words, to improve your relationships at work and at home.
Last class we started talking about assertive curiosity and we studied 3 points:
1- Make assertive curiosity an emotional experience;
2- See yourself as a student;
3- Interactive listening.
Point 4 is being interactive without an agenda. "It's about being flexible in adjusting to other people's interests and having the confidence to admit that another point of view might be just as valid as your own". Dale lists several questions (17 to be precise - yes, I counted them) and all of them have one thing in common: they're open questions. Start your questions with "WH" questions and the conversation will become more interesting.
Point 5 is sharing your personal stories with flare. "How can you ignite curiosity in another person if you yourself don't seem very interesting?" There have to be some theatrics involved, Dale explains. The last point (6) is humor. "Humor and curiosity go together, because both depend on the pleasure of surprise and the unexpected".
Understand other people's point of view so you can adjust yours, share your stories with flare and add humor to your life. When people are having fun they're open to listen and learn. Who's the funniest person you know? Comment here and see you next class!
